New Campus Academic Building See photo gallery This flexible structure accommodates the school library, music and art classrooms as well as a spaces for the new middle school. The building site is a parcel bounded by the school to the north, utility easement to the east, residential street to the south and residence to the west. To make best use of site, the design is calibrated to the maximum allowable zoning envelope and uses form, material and scale to engage the architectural character of both school and neighborhood. The interior is organized in response to both solar orientation and privacy with the lobby, circulation and stair spaces placed on the north campus facing side and the classrooms placed on the south facing side along the tree lined quiet residential street. The library and music classroom occupy the Ground Floor with tall 10’ flat ceilings and transoms above windows. The middle school and art classroom occupy the Second Floor with vaulted ceilings ranging from 8’ to 12’ and skylights to supplement the windows. All of the spaces have abundant natural lighting, views of nature and operable windows allowing for fresh air. Natural wood is expressed throughout with doors and windows. Sustainable design informed decisions about siting and interior organization, healthy interior environment, use of super-insulated walls and roof, high efficiency heating equipment, lighting sensors, use of recycled interior materials and durable exterior materials to minimize maintenance. |
